Snags of Bloedel Reserve is an ongoing series highlighting my favorite snags (dead, standing trees) and the habitat they provide to their surroundings. In 2024, I was awarded the Community Creative Residency at Bloedel Reserve. The Reserve gave me a year-long membership and unrestricted access to its beautiful grounds. While my original intent was to focus on the bees and pollinators found there, I was struck by the sculptural beauty of the various snags tucked into its forests and along its trails. Not only that, but I noticed that these snags were teeming with life, even in the winter, as they provide food and shelter for an abundance of wildlife.
In this series, I begin by illustrating my favorite snags throughout Bloedel, then catalogue, through linocuts and etchings, all of the wildlife I’ve noticed on them in the last year. This series will be completed by the end of 2025, but I wanted to go ahead and share its progress here.
